In the 18th and 19th centuries, war in America changed from battlefields with facing lines of soldiers to small scale guerilla attacks, and then to action in large scale impersonal battles. Not coincidentally, the illustration of war in the popular press and wartime propoganda became part of the embattled milieu. Thanks to the richness of the Delaware Art Museum's illustration collections, this small exhibition will include artists' interpretation of war from the 18th through the 20th centuries.
